Precision Die Cut Parts For Aerospace Applications
Although liquid adhesives are a common choice for structural bonding, specialty tapes offer a fast-bonding, highly reproducible application that can accommodate multiple substrates.
Custom die cut adhesives offer a multipurpose, lightweight alternative to mechanical fasteners. At Strouse, we use these materials to deliver a better value without compromising strength or performance. There are two primary benefits of using die cut adhesives for bonding:
1) Die cuts weigh significantly less than metal joining attachments
2) Die cuts perform additional functions such as vibration reduction (using foam and rubber) or EMI/RFI shielding.
Bonding, Sealing, & Gasketing
On an aircraft, adhesive bonding comes in many forms, including panel securement, electronics assembly, and internal design applications. Aerospace gaskets and seals are essential for sealing windows, fuel tanks, and other components.
Bonding dissimilar aerospace substrates is an easy problem for an experienced converter to solve by using adhesive lamination to create custom material stack-ups and adhesive combinations.
Paper and Foil Masking
Paint masking kits are often used during paint jobs or when applying finishes before the aircraft construction is done. Masking components fit over lights, openings, windows, or the vehicle's surface to protect it from paint or other substances.
Applying rolls of masking tape can be slow, imprecise, or wasteful. Masking kits enable workers to quickly and precisely mask the areas they need, often allowing for clean, easy removal with tabs.
Another common type of masking is foil masking for window masks during sandblasting. Sandblasting is used to maintain or strip paint from the sides of an aircraft, but it requires window covering to prevent them from becoming scratched and damaged.
Screen and Display Assembly
The internal vibrations of air or spacecraft can pose a technological hazard, and companies use computer mounts with adhesive gaskets. These pieces are inlaid to hold the frame of a mount or cushion, computers, and other devices together, protecting them from accidental damage caused by sudden movements during takeoff or turbulence.
In addition, manufacturers often use optically clear or film die cuts to construct screens and monitors.
EMI and RFI Shielding
Aerospace devices are riddled with sensitive technology, and monitors are bombarded with stray signals during takeoff and landing. Built-in adhesive EMI and RFI shielding, in the form of gaskets or foils, prevents potential issues that could disrupt regular operations.
Thermal Management Applications
Many aerospace applications demand high-performance thermal-management bonding materials to aid heat dissipation.
Thermal gap pads are an example of a die cut material attached to hot fixtures such as the exhaust or CPU. A skilled converter can process thick, challenging materials such as gap pads into precise parts.
