Custom Labeling Options: Barcodes, Tracking, and More

The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and the world is at peace thanks to your clearly defined label requirements

OK, maybe project development isn’t all sunshine and rainbows, but defining your labeling needs sooner rather than later can help you reduce costs and simplify the production process.

Like many of your manufacturing predecessors, you may not recognize how drastically labeling requirements can affect converting costs. Understanding your goals from the onset will allow Strouse to plan more cost-effective methods to build your solution.

This article will explain how to define your labeling requirements and achieve high-quality custom labels that suit your manufacturing needs.

Establish Your Labeling Requirements

Different labels may display brand logos, lots, dates, or product instructions. Complex labeling requirements correspond with higher production costs.

WHEN TO DEFINE LABELING REQUIREMENTS

Disclose your labeling needs as soon as possible to reduce the chances of delays and increase the accuracy of your production quote.

Let’s say a purchasing manager asks us to quote 200 simple, circular parts with a dot printed in the middle. What happens if they contact us after the finalized purchase order to ask for tons of additional labeling requirements? Now their entire process must be re-quoted and adjusted for the production time it may take to generate labels with accurate tracking information.

Establishing labeling requirements upfront will enable a quicker and more accurate quoting process.

COMMON LABELING REQUIREMENTS

Different products may have vastly different print requirements. The following list summarizes those that we offer most frequently.

1. LABELS WITH LOGOS AND PICTOGRAMS

  • Matching brand colors (and spot coloring)
  • Flood coating

2. LABELS WITH PRODUCT INFORMATION

  • Including expiration dates
  • Including data matrix codes
  • Including Unique Device Identifications (UDIs)

3. LABELS FOR SLITTING AND PACKAGING

  • Barcoding part quantity, footage, part numbers, lot numbers, weight, etc.
  • Tracking raw material lot numbers on labels
  • Tracking roll position (if slit from a log)
  • Labeling cores, bags, and boxes

While the cost of die cut printing depends on multiple factors, defining your labeling needs upfront will help you and your converter collaborate to create a simplified, less costly production process.

Create High-Quality Labels with Strouse

Regardless of your labeling requirements, we understand that your part’s functionality and branding depend on the print quality and accuracy. Poor-quality labels, which suffer from blurriness, smudging, and other defects, can cause disorganization, confusion, and operational inconsistencies.

Your converter might offer custom printing capabilities, but do they have quality control processes that can meet your needs?

Strouse offers flexographic and digital printing services for part and package labels. Our quality control procedures are tailored to your budget, allowing us to meet your labeling requirements and standards.
